L’histoire industrielle du territoire, transcendée par des designers contemporains : l’exposition « Passé présent – Mémoire industrielle » au Fresnoy, Tourcoing.

En parallèle de l’exposition « Panorama 22 – Les sentinelles », le rendez-vous annuel de la création au Fresnoy.

Une histoire industrielle régionale forte confrontée à des regards actuels de designers, tel est le propos de l’exposition. Ce projet vise à promouvoir le territoire des Hauts-de-France et ses savoir-faire. Il met en exergue la valeur ajoutée du design au coeur de l’entreprise, son ouverture vers l’innovation, la différenciation, la compétitivité.

Des entreprises emblématiques et reconnues pour leur savoir-faire exceptionnel, sont associées à des designers, sous le regard d’Alain Fleischer, cinéaste, pour documenter ces collaborations. En découle la production d’objets nouveaux, véritable célébration du patrimoine vivant, sacralisés le temps d’une exposition en regard de films témoignages.

« Filmer la relation d’un designer à un matériau et à un outil de production, c’est montrer que le design – comme peut l’être aussi le cinéma – est à la fois une création artistique et une production industrielle. Le travail du designer consiste à inventer une forme de beauté liée à une fonction ou, pour simplifier, une relation harmonieuse entre l’oeil et la main ou le corps en général. Entre ce en quoi un objet se prête à un usage et ce à quoi il fait rêver. »
précise Alain Fleischer.

À travers ce dialogue entre objets nouveaux, révélés par une scénographie singulière, et films sur écrans monumentaux, il s’agit de raconter l’objet en train de se faire face à son rendu final. Ces films démontrent également à travers cette expérimentation « in situ », que le design revitalise les savoir-faire des entreprises.

Céline Savoye, directrice de lille—design et commissaire de plusieurs expositions dans les domaines de la mode, du design et de l’artisanat, précise par ailleurs que “l’idée est de donner à voir ce que nous ne voyons pas une fois l’objet fini comme le process industriel ou le savoir-faire artisanal. Montrer le designer « designer », comment il opère, comment il oeuvre, les aller-retour avec les équipes de production des entreprises sont des phases passionnantes. L’ultime étape étant la production de l’objet, le fruit d’une collaboration parfois longue et sinueuse. Le film est un médium qui permet de rendre compte de cela.”

Le dispositif se poursuit au-delà de 2020, avec les Fonderies de Sougland, entreprise 4 fois centenaire, la plus ancienne des Hauts-de-France, présentée lors de l’exposition à travers un film court. Elle sera associée dès 2021 à un designer.

Past, present: industrial memory

The industrial history of the region, surpassed by contemporary designers: the "Past present – Industrial memory" exhibition at Le Fresnoy, Tourcoing.

In parallel with the exhibition "Panorama 22 - Les sentinelles", the annual creative event at Le Fresnoy.

The exhibition deals with the clash between the strong regional industrial history and the views and current practices of designers. This project aims to promote the Hauts-de-France region and its know-how. It highlights the added value of design within a business environment, its openness to innovation, differentiation and competitiveness.

Iconic companies rewarded for their exceptional know-how are associated with designers, under the watchful eye of Alain Fleischer, filmmaker, to document these collaborations. The result is the production of new objects, a true celebration of living heritage, elevated to a sacred status for the duration of an exhibition and compared with films of testimonials.

« Filming a designer's relationship to a material and a production tool means showing that design - as can also be the case with cinema - is both an artistic creation and an industrial production. The designer's work consists in inventing a form of beauty linked to a function or, to simplify, a harmonious relationship between the eye and the hand or the body in general. Between what an object lends itself to use and what it makes you dream. » specifies Alain Fleischer

Thanks to this dialogue between new objects, which are given a sacred status in the display, and films projected on huge screens, the goal is to describe the object that is being made and compare it with its final appearance. By way of this "in situ" experimentation, the films demonstrate that design can breathe new life into the know-how of companies.
 
Céline Savoye, director of lille-design and curator of several exhibitions in the fields of fashion, design and craftsmanship, also specifies that "the idea is to show what we don't see once the object is finished, such as the industrial process or the craftsmanship. Showing the "designer" designs, how he works, the back and forth with the companies' production teams are exciting phases. The final stage being the production of the object, the fruit of a sometimes long and sinuous collaboration. The film is a medium that makes it possible to display this".

The scheme will continue beyond 2020, with the Fonderies de Sougland, a four-century-old company, the oldest in the Hauts-de-France, presented during the exhibition through a short film. From 2021, it will be associated with a designer.
