Let's hope this year brings successive good news. Of course, the good news of this past October 14th still rings in our ears: designation as Lille Métropole, World Design Capital 2020 which sets our course. But not only.

This award is not our unique perspective, it is much more. It enables deployment of lille—design actions beyond the metropolitan area, which makes this a new challenge. The regional territory must be conquered, ensuring the necessary response which will give this metropolitan event the scale it deserves: starting now, let's unite with the cities of Dunkirk, Lens, Arras, Fourmies, Calais, and others. The good news is they are already attracted by the design approach and discipline: monographic or thematic exhibitions, original experiments aligning tourism and service design, industry and product design, local communities and design management, for example, must be built now.

Lille Metropole will not be forgotten. The North Touch exhibition is already planned for next autumn and will become a biennial event, coupled with the one in Courtrai. It's a matter of reaching beyond our local and regional territory, to a national and European level.

lille—design and its partners have already undertaken great meetings promoting cross-fertilization of ideas. Conversations on design and what it has to teach us will set the tone throughout the year, such as Ronan Bouroullec's visit on January 11th: designers, design historians, sociologists, and notables will comment, explain, analyze, and define the field of design, an approach, a production, a historical period, a transformation.

We will support the Lille metropolitan area in its quest for exemplarity through design as 2020 approaches. Supported by François Dutilleul, our Business Club president, we will strengthen the circle of companies looking to succeed through design, to experiment, or to undertake a design approach within their own organizations. The support offered by lille—design will be more and more targeted and specific: training cycles will be proposed to designers, entrepreneurs, and for the first time, to teachers and professors.

Much good news will punctuate this new year, and let's not forget, this is a year for discovering other cities, other approaches, starting with Mexico City, which also became World Design Capital 2018 a few days ago!
